CASE STUDY / BLACK BRAND

MEMBERSHIP BRAND SYSTEMS GROWTH STRATEGY SPONSORSHIP

The organization was growing. The systems had to grow with it.

Black BRAND was expanding its membership, programs, events and partnerships across Hampton Roads. My work focused on building the brand, systems and experiences that could support that growth—making the organization easier to understand, easier to engage with and better equipped to communicate its value.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As the organization grew, so did the complexity behind it. Membership, programming, sponsorship, communications and brand expression needed a stronger connective system.

THE ASSIGNMENT / WHAT GROWTH REQUIRED

More activity created more complexity.

As Black BRAND expanded, the challenge was no longer simply creating more programs, events or opportunities. The organization needed stronger systems connecting membership, communications, sponsorship, programming and brand expression.

01

MEMBERSHIP

Make the value easier to understand.

Membership needed clearer positioning, stronger communication and a more deliberate experience so people could understand what they were joining, what they received and why deeper participation mattered.

02

PROGRAMMING

Make the ecosystem easier to navigate.

Multiple programs, events, cohorts and conferences needed clearer connective tissue so the organization could present a more coherent experience instead of a collection of disconnected offerings.

03

SPONSORSHIP

Make the opportunity easier to buy into.

Growth required sponsorship materials and partnership narratives that could communicate scale, impact and value clearly enough to support larger funding conversations.

04

BRAND SYSTEMS

Make the organization easier to recognize.

As more people created materials across more initiatives, the brand needed structure strong enough to create consistency without flattening the energy of the organization.

WHAT GROWTH CREATED

More members. More programs. More partners. More communications. More ways for the experience to become fragmented.

WHAT I BUILT TOWARD

A stronger connective system—one that could help the organization communicate clearly, scale more consistently and turn activity into a more coherent member experience.

THE GROWTH SYSTEM / WHAT I BUILT

Growth needed connective tissue.

The work wasn’t one campaign or one deliverable. It was a connected system across membership, brand governance, sponsorship, digital growth and programming—built to make the organization easier to understand, easier to engage with and better equipped to scale.

MEMBERSHIP / VALUE + EXPERIENCE

Make membership easier to understand—and easier to choose.

I helped reshape how membership value was explained, packaged and experienced, creating clearer materials and tangible member touchpoints that made the benefits of deeper participation easier to see.

THE SYSTEM

Membership booklet, ambassador materials, member kit and supporting journey tools.

BRAND SYSTEM / GOVERNANCE

Turn an existing identity into a brand people could actually use.

The logo and color palette predated my work. I built the strategic and practical system around them— clarifying vision and values, developing voice and messaging standards, defining typography and visual-use conventions, and translating it all into a 45-page guideline system.

A system designed to create consistency across programs, partnerships and communications without flattening the personality of the organization.

SPONSORSHIP / PARTNERSHIP VALUE

Give partners a clearer reason to invest.

I developed Black BRAND’s corporate sponsorship strategy and deck to communicate the scale of the organization, the value of its programming and the opportunity for partners to participate in a more meaningful way.

STRATEGY → STORY → FUNDING

The work translated organizational reach and impact into a partnership narrative that could support larger sponsorship conversations.

DIGITAL GROWTH / MEMBER JOURNEY

Design the path between interest and action.

The digital experience needed to do more than hold information. I built tools and journey logic that helped prospective members understand what came next and move through the decision process more deliberately.

TRIAL MEMBER ROADMAP

A clearer journey from introduction to participation, designed to reduce uncertainty and make the next action easier to see.

PROGRAM ECOSYSTEM / LIVED EXPERIENCE

Build systems strong enough to support a lot of activity.

The brand system, membership tools and growth infrastructure existed to support a substantial real-world ecosystem— events, cohorts, conferences and member experiences happening across the organization year-round.

THE POINT

Infrastructure mattered because the organization was already doing a lot. The work helped that activity read as one connected experience.

THE THROUGH-LINE

Clarify the value. Build the system. Make participation easier. Give growth somewhere to go.

THE RECEIPTS / WHAT MOVED

Growth showed up in the numbers.

The systems weren’t built for appearance. They were built to help people choose, join, invest, participate and understand the organization more clearly.

01 MEMBERSHIP VALUE
70%

increase in new and renewing members selecting higher membership tiers.

After the membership experience was redesigned, more members chose deeper levels of participation.

02 DIGITAL GROWTH
~30%

more new members through the first automated online funnel.

A more deliberate digital path helped turn interest into action without relying entirely on manual follow-up.

03 SPONSORSHIP
$2.5M+

in sponsorship funding connected to strategy, decks and partnership materials developed over two years.

The sponsorship system helped translate organizational scale and impact into stronger partnership conversations.

THE OPERATING REALITY

The system had to support a lot of moving parts.

~93 EVENTS ANNUALLY
4 MAJOR PROGRAMS
14–16 PROGRAM COHORTS
3 CONFERENCES
THE POINT

The organization wasn’t growing in one direction. The systems had to help membership, programming, sponsorship and communications grow together.

MY ROLE / WHAT I ACTUALLY OWNED

I built the systems around the growth.

My role moved across membership, brand governance, sponsorship, digital journeys, program communications and growth infrastructure—connecting the parts so the organization could operate and communicate more coherently.

01 MEMBERSHIP STRATEGY

Clarify the value of joining.

I helped reshape the membership experience, including value communication, member-facing materials, tier presentation and supporting tools designed to make deeper participation easier to understand and choose.

02 BRAND GOVERNANCE

Build structure around an existing identity.

The logo and color palette predated my work. I clarified vision and values, developed voice and messaging standards, defined typography and visual-use conventions, and translated that thinking into a 45-page guideline system.

03 SPONSORSHIP STRATEGY

Turn organizational value into a stronger partnership story.

I developed Black BRAND’s corporate sponsorship strategy and deck, shaping how scale, impact and programming value were communicated to prospective partners and funders.

04 DIGITAL GROWTH

Design the path from interest to action.

I helped build the organization’s first automated online membership funnel and supporting member-journey tools, reducing friction between discovery, decision and participation.

05 PROGRAM + COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS

Keep the ecosystem from reading like disconnected activity.

Across events, programs, cohorts and conferences, I developed communication and brand systems that helped the organization present a more connected experience across a high volume of activity.

THE THROUGH-LINE

Clarify the value. Codify the brand. Build the pathway. Support the growth.
